Internal vs External TPMS: Pros, Cons, & When to Choose

Internal vs External TPMS: Pros, Cons, & When to Choose

CHIGEE offers two types of Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors: internal and external. Both provide real-time monitoring of your motorcycle’s tire pressure and temperature, but they differ in installation, maintenance, and durability.

External TPMS Sensors

Screw directly onto the tire valve stem outside the wheel.

✅ Advantages:
  • Easy DIY installation and replacement
  • Battery is replaceable
  • Convenient option for frequent riders or those who switch tires often
⚠️ Limitations:
  • Slightly more exposed to theft, water, or impact
  • May be less accurate in measuring internal tire temperature

Internal TPMS Sensors

Installed inside the tire, replacing the original valve stem.

✅ Advantages:
  • Hidden from view for a clean look
  • Better protection from theft and weather
  • More accurate temperature readings (measured inside the tire)

⚠️ Limitations:

  • Requires professional installation (tire must be removed)
  • Battery is non-replaceable
→ When the battery is depleted, the entire sensor must be replaced
→ Typical battery life: approx. 2-3 years

📌 Which One Should I Choose?

  • Choose External TPMS if you prefer convenience, easy battery replacement, and minimal installation effort.
  • Choose Internal TPMS if you want a clean install with better protection and can manage professional installation.
