OBD ‘No Protocol’ Error Explained (Triumph Case Study as Reference)

Overview

When using the Chigee OBD adapter, some riders may encounter a “No Protocol” message on the Chigee Display. This means the device cannot establish communication with the motorcycle’s ECU.
This issue is not limited to a single brand or model—it can occur on many motorcycles if the ECU is not fully powered. One common reason is the position of the kill switch (emergency stop switch).

General Causes of “No Protocol”

  1. Ignition ON but Kill Switch OFF

    • The dashboard may light up, but the ECU remains inactive.
    • In this state, the OBD cannot communicate, leading to “No Protocol.”
  2. Incorrect or Loose OBD Connection

    • Ensure the OBD adapter is fully seated in the diagnostic port.

  3. Unsupported or Different OBD Protocol

    • Some older motorcycles or special editions may use non-standard OBD protocols.

  4. Bike ECU Not Powered

    • Even with ignition ON, if the kill switch is OFF, the ECU is disabled.
    • Without ECU power, no data will be transmitted to the Chigee OBD adapter.

Understanding the Kill Switch

  • Location: Typically on the right-hand handlebar near the throttle.
  • Labeling: Often red, marked with “RUN / OFF” or a power symbol.
  • Function:
    • RUN / ON: Powers the ECU and engine system, enabling OBD communication.
    • OFF: Cuts ECU power, preventing any OBD data exchange.
👉 Always ensure both the ignition key and the kill switch are in the ON/RUN position when using the OBD adapter.

Case Example: 2023 Triumph Street Triple

  • The 2023 Triumph Street Triple comes with a 6-pin OBD connector, fully compatible with the Chigee OBD adapter (no extra adapter required).
  • During testing:
    • Ignition ON + Kill Switch OFF: Dashboard lights up, but Chigee Display shows “No Protocol.”
    • Ignition ON + Kill Switch ON: ECU powers up, and the Chigee OBD adapter connects normally, displaying bike data.

This demonstrates how the kill switch position directly determines whether the Chigee OBD can communicate with the motorcycle.
