Phone Overheating on CarPlay/Android Auto: Causes & Tips

Phone Overheating on CarPlay/Android Auto: Causes & Tips

It's not uncommon for your phone to become hot while using CarPlay or Android Auto, especially during long rides or while using certain apps. In some cases, overheating can even cause the connection to drop or your phone to slow down.

Notes
This issue is caused by your phone's internal workload and is not related to CHIGEE Display hardware.

What's Causing the Heat?

When your phone connects to CarPlay or Android Auto โ€” especially over wireless connections โ€” it begins to process several intensive tasks at once, such as:

  • Constant real-time screen mirroring
  • Running navigation apps with location tracking
  • Streaming music
  • Handling Bluetooth connections with headsets or the vehicle

This significantly increases CPU and battery usage, leading to heat buildup. Some phone models and chipsets are more prone to overheating, especially in warm environments or when placed in phone mounts with limited airflow.

When Specific Apps Cause Extreme Heat

We've seen reports that certain navigation apps (particularly lesser-optimized or resource-heavy ones) can cause excessive heating.

Info
If you notice that your phone becomes especially hot when using a specific app, we recommend stopping use of that app and switching to an alternative such as Google Maps or Apple Maps to test performance.

Tips to Reduce Overheating

Here are some practical ways to help lower your phone's temperature while using CarPlay or Android Auto:

1. Reduce Background Activity

  • Close unnecessary apps running in the background
  • Disable automatic app updates or syncing during your ride

2. Improve Airflow

  • Avoid placing your phone in direct sunlight or on the dashboard
  • Use a mount with ventilation or try a passive cooling pad

3. Adjust Phone Settings

  • Lower screen brightness
  • Disable non-essential features like 5G, or live wallpapers

๐Ÿ“Œ Still Overheating?

If your phone continues to overheat despite taking the steps above, we recommend:

  • Testing with a different phone model
  • Monitoring battery health (older batteries are more heat-sensitive)
  • Contacting your phone manufacturer for further hardware-specific support
