Fix: No Sound with a Bluetooth Headset on CarPlay or Android Auto

Fix: No Sound with a Bluetooth Headset on CarPlay or Android Auto

Applies to: CHIGEE displays using CarPlay or Android Auto with a Bluetooth headset/intercom.
Key idea: With CarPlay/Android Auto, audio comes from your phone to your headset. The CHIGEE display does not output app audio.

How it should be connected

Apple CarPlay

  • Pair your headset to your iPhone (only). Do not pair the headset to the CHIGEE display.
  • Audio path: CHIGEE Display ⇔ iPhone ⇔ Bluetooth Headset

Android Auto

  • Pair your headset to both the phone and the CHIGEE display.
    • Phone ⇔ Headset = music, nav prompts, phone call audio
    • CHIGEE Display ⇔ Headset = microphone path for voice commands/assistant
  • Audio path: Phone ⇔ Headset and CHIGEE Display ⇔ Headset

Fast fixes

  1. Select the headset as the active output.
    • iPhone (CarPlay): Open Control Center → long-press Now Playing → tap the AirPlay (triangle/circles) icon → pick your headset.
      • Bonus (new iOS 26 setting): If CarPlay keeps stealing your headphone audio, enable Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity → Keep Audio with Headphones.
    • Android (Android Auto): Press Volume → tap the output icon; or swipe down for Quick SettingsMedia output → select your headset.
      •  On Samsung Galaxy it’s explicitly labeled Media output in Quick Panel.
  2. Turn up all volumes.
    • Phone media volume, headset volume, and app/nav guidance volume (many apps have a separate slider).
    • Disable Mute/Silent or Do Not Disturb/Focus modes.
  3. Disconnect extra Bluetooth devices.
    • Cars, speakers, BMW TFT, second intercoms can “steal” audio. Turn them off and test.
  4. Power-cycle & re-pair.
    • Reboot phone and display; toggle your headset off/on.
    • If needed: Forget the headset on the phone, re-pair cleanly.

Platform specifics & common pitfalls

iPhone (CarPlay)

  • Settings → Bluetooth → your headset → ensure it’s set as Headphone and “Connect for This iPhone” is enabled.
  • In Apple/Google Maps, verify Voice Guidance is On (not muted).

Android (Android Auto)

  • Settings → Bluetooth → your headset → ensure Media audio (A2DP) is On (and Call audio (HFP) if you take calls).
  • Some Android skins kill background apps—allow Android Auto, Bluetooth, and your music/nav apps to run unrestricted.

Helmet intercom notes

  • Intercom/mesh vs. music (A2DP): Some headsets lower/disable stereo music while in intercom modes. Switch to a mode that allows A2DP, or turn off intercom during navigation/music.
  • Multipoint pairing: Make the phone that runs CarPlay/Android Auto the primary device on the headset.

Clean re-pair (when issues persist)

  1. On the phone, Forget the headset.
  2. On the headset, clear pairing memory (follow the headset manual).
  3. Reboot phone and CHIGEE.
  4. CarPlay: pair Headset ⇔ iPhone only, then start CarPlay.
  5. Android Auto: pair Headset ⇔ Phone, confirm music plays; then pair Headset ⇔ CHIGEE display for the mic path; start Android Auto.

If there’s still no sound

  • Test the phone ⇔ headset alone (without CHIGEE). If that fails, the issue is phone/headset.
  • Try a different headset or different phone to isolate.
  • Update phone OS, headset firmware (if available), and CHIGEE firmware.
  • Android users: avoid Android Auto Beta—use the stable release.
