Fix an OBD 'No Protocol' error

Understand what an OBD 'No Protocol' error means and check common causes, including the kill switch, using the Triumph example as a reference.

Overview

When using the CHIGEE OBD adapter, some riders may encounter a “No Protocol” message on the CHIGEE Display. This means the device cannot establish communication with the motorcycle’s ECU.

This issue is not limited to a single brand or model—it can occur on many motorcycles if the ECU is not fully powered. One common reason is the position of the kill switch (emergency stop switch).

General Causes of “No Protocol”

  1. Ignition ON but Kill Switch OFF

    • On some motorcycles, the dashboard may light up while the kill switch interrupts power to the engine control unit (ECU) or its main relay.

    • In that situation, the OBD Module cannot establish ECU communication, even if the diagnostic port still has power.

  2. Incorrect or Loose OBD Connection

    • Ensure the OBD adapter is fully seated in the diagnostic port.

  3. Unsupported or Different OBD Protocol

    • Some older motorcycles or special editions may use non-standard OBD protocols.

  4. Bike ECU Not Powered

    • Whether the kill switch interrupts ECU power depends on the motorcycle. On other models, it stops ignition or fuel injection while ECU and OBD communication remain available.

    • Without ECU power, no data will be transmitted to the CHIGEE OBD adapter.

Understanding the Kill Switch

  • Location: Typically on the right-hand handlebar near the throttle.

  • Labeling: Often red, marked with “RUN / OFF” or a power symbol.

  • Function:

    • RUN / ON: Allows normal engine operation. Check that the switch is in RUN before troubleshooting ECU power, the OBD connection and protocol compatibility.

    • OFF: Stops the engine. Depending on the motorcycle, ECU power and OBD communication may remain available or may be interrupted.

Ensure both the ignition key and the kill switch are in the ON/RUN position when using the OBD adapter.

Case Example: 2023 Triumph Street Triple

  • The tested 2023 Triumph Street Triple had a 6-pin OBD connector, which connected to the CHIGEE OBD adapter without an extra adapter in this test.

  • During testing:

    • Ignition ON + Kill Switch OFF: Dashboard lights up, but CHIGEE Display shows “No Protocol.”

    • Ignition ON + Kill Switch ON: ECU powers up, and the CHIGEE OBD adapter connects normally, displaying bike data.

This result applies to the tested 2023 Triumph Street Triple. It does not mean that switching the kill switch OFF interrupts OBD communication on every motorcycle.
