External TPMS — Air Leak After Installation (How to Fix)

External TPMS — Air Leak After Installation (How to Fix)

Applies to: External tire-pressure sensors — CHIGEE Display TPMS, G3 TPMS
Symptoms: Tire loses air / hissing noise / pressure drops soon after installing the sensor.

Why Leaks Happen (Most Common Causes)

  • Over-tightening the sensor or anti-theft nut → damages the rubber seal (red O-ring) or the valve core gasket.
  • Wrong valve type or modified stems → stem/threads or seat don’t match the sensor.
  • Damaged / missing seal inside the sensor (the red rubber ring) or a loose valve core.
  • Dirt on the seat (sand, burrs, old teflon) preventing a clean seal.

Correct Installation (Do This First)

  1. Clean & inspect the valve stem threads and seat. Make sure it’s a standard Schrader motorcycle valve (not Presta/adapters).

  2. Hand-tighten the sensor body only.

    • Turn by hand until the gasket makes firm contact; do not use a wrench on the sensor body.

  3. Anti-theft nut (if included):

    • Slide it up to touch the sensor, then snug it with the tiny set screw lightly (tool only for the anti-theft nut).

    • Do not use the set screw to “force-seal” the sensor.

  4. Leak test: Inflate to spec, then brush soapy water on the valve base and sensor. Watch for bubbles.

Over-tightening can cut or deform the seal and cause a leak. The sensor itself should always be hand-tight only.

If It Still Leaks

  1. Re-seat & re-test

    • Remove the sensor, wipe the seat and threads, reinstall hand-tight, then re-do the soapy-water test.

  2. Check the valve hardware

    • Ensure the valve core is snug (lightly tighten with a valve-core tool).

    • If you use aftermarket/modified stems, confirm compatibility with external TPMS; try another wheel/stem if possible.

  3. Inspect the sensor’s seal

    • Open/inspect the internal red rubber ring (O-ring) in the sensor. If cracked, flattened, or missing, it will leak.

    • Replace the seal and test again.

When to Contact Support

  • Leak persists after replacing the red rubber ring and re-testing.

  • You suspect stem incompatibility or thread damage.

  • Provide: photos of the stem and sensor, soapy-water test video, and the bike model/stem type.
