Phone gets hot while using CarPlay or Android Auto

Why your phone heats up while running CarPlay or Android Auto on long rides, and how to keep it cooler.

Your phone can get hot while it runs CarPlay or Android Auto on the CHIGEE Display, especially on long rides or with certain apps. The heat comes from your phone's workload, not from the CHIGEE Display, and it can make the connection drop or slow your phone down.

What makes your phone hot

When your phone runs wireless CarPlay or Android Auto, it handles several demanding tasks at the same time:

  • Sending the screen to the CHIGEE Display in real time

  • Running navigation apps with location tracking

  • Streaming music

  • Keeping Bluetooth connections to your headset and the CHIGEE Display

Together, these tasks raise processor and battery use, which builds up heat. Some phone models and chipsets heat up more than others, especially in warm weather or in phone mounts with little airflow.

Some apps make your phone much hotter

Some navigation apps, especially resource-heavy or less optimized ones, can make your phone much hotter than others.

Tip: If your phone gets especially hot with one app, stop using that app and try Google Maps or Apple Maps instead to compare.

Keep your phone cooler

To lower your phone's temperature while you use CarPlay or Android Auto on the CHIGEE Display, try the following:

  • Background activity: close apps you aren't using, and turn off automatic app updates and syncing during your ride.

  • Airflow: keep your phone out of direct sunlight, and use a ventilated mount or a passive cooling pad.

  • Phone settings: lower the screen brightness, and turn off features you don't need, such as 5G or live wallpapers.

If your phone still overheats

If your phone keeps overheating after these changes, try the following:

  • Test with a different phone model.

  • Check your phone's battery health, because older batteries are more sensitive to heat.

  • Contact your phone's manufacturer for support with your phone's hardware.
