Data Overlays on Dashcam Footage — GPS vs Motorcycle Data

Data Overlays on Dashcam Footage — GPS vs Motorcycle Data

Applies to: All CHIGEE Displays with a dashcam (e.g., AIO-6 with camera, AIO-5 Lite).
Goal: Understand which data the display provides by itself vs. what can be read from the motorcycle to overlay on exported videos in CHIGEE GO.

1) Built-in Device Data (no bike connection required)

These fields come from the CHIGEE Display itself and are available on all camera models:
  • Time/Date
  • GPS latitude/longitude
  • GPS-derived speed
AIO-6 only: adds Lean Angle (thanks to its onboard inclination sensor).

2) Bike-Sourced Data (requires a data connection)

Additional signals (examples: RPM, brake status, turn indicators, etc.) depend on what your motorcycle actually exposes. Availability varies by brand, model year, ECU, and the connection path you use:

  • BMW Nav Cradle (AIO-6 + BMW Quick-Release Module; BMW with Nav Prep 5/6)
  • CGRC LIN Module (BMW 3-pin Nav interface; data + Wonder Wheel on supported models)
  • CG OBD Module (many non-BMW; confirm protocol/connector on the product page)
Not every bike publishes every signal. If a signal (e.g., RPM) isn’t exposed by your bike/ECU or through the chosen path, it won’t be available for overlays—this is normal.

3) Device Overlay

Where to set it
On the CHIGEE Display: Dashcam view → tap screen → Settings (gear) → Data Overlay

What the toggle means
  • ON → The selected fields are burned into all future recordings. They cannot be removed from those clips later.
  • OFF → That field is not recorded for overlay and will not be available in the CHIGEE GO app (you can’t add it during export).

Turn fields on/off individually
You can enable just the items you want stamped on video:

  • Time/Date
  • Speed (GPS-derived)
  • Latitude/Longitude (GPS)

Tips

  • For privacy (e.g., hide speed) set Speed = OFF on the display; then neither SD-card files nor app exports can show speed. Your exported videos and SD-card files won’t show speed, while Time and Lat/Long can remain ON.
  • Changes apply to new clips only; previously recorded videos won’t be altered.

4) Chigee Go App Overlay

What this does
After you connect your CHIGEE Display to the CHIGEE GO app, you can export videos with riding-data overlays.
The app can only overlay fields that are allowed on the display. If a field (e.g., Speed) is OFF on the display’s Data Overlay settings, it won’t be available in the app.

You can include these additional data overlays (if available for that clip):

  • Compass — heading/bearing (requires a valid GPS/IMU heading during the recording).
  • Altitude — elevation from GNSS (requires a valid GPS fix during the recording).
  • TPMS — live tire pressure* (requires paired TPMS and valid readings during the recording).
*Supports CHIGEE external/internal TPMS models once paired to the CHIGEE Display.

Step-by-step

  1. Connect the display to CHIGEE GO app
  2. Download original footage from the device
    • Go to Car device album.
    • Tap the top-right icon to multi-select clips.
    • Download.
    • After download completes, clips appear in the app’s Local album.
  3. Choose overlay data
    • Open the clip in Local album.
    • Select the overlay fields you want (e.g., Time/Date, GPS lat/long, Speed, Compass).
    • Fields disabled on the display will not appear here.
  4. Export with overlay
    • Tap the top-right icon to Export.
    • The app renders a new video with the selected overlay.
Important limitations & tips
  • App data is required for overlay: If you uninstall CHIGEE GO, your riding log data stored in the app is permanently deleted. Without that data, even if the raw video still exists elsewhere, you cannot re-export a version with riding info.
  • Originals vs. exports: The original files you downloaded remain unmodified; overlays are added only to exported copies.
